Welcome!  If you are an LPN looking for information about becoming an RN in New York State, this website describes an exciting option that is available to you.

Overview: The Coalition for Educational Mobility’s LPN to RN Articulation Model provides a way for
practical nurses to advance their educational and nursing practice levels in New York State. LPNs
who participate in the Articulation Model take a three-credit-equivalent course called the PN to RN
Transition Course. The course is designed to validate a student’s previous learning. Successful
completion of the course facilitates advanced placement in one of the Associate Degree (RN) Nursing
Programs
that participate in the Articulation Model.

You are encouraged to use the information on this website as a starting point for learning how the
Articulation Model works. After gaining a general understanding from this website, contact individual
nursing programs directly for further details.

Be sure to keep in mind the fact that each participating Associate Degree (RN) nursing program has
its own requirements for admission and transfer of credits for courses taken at other schools. There
are variations from one school to another, so it is essential that you contact the RN nursing
program(s) you are interested in attending.

According to the original precepts of the Articulation Model, participating Associate Degree (RN) nursing programs demonstrate a strong commitment to facilitate placement into the nursing sequence.  Participating schools also agree to:

  • Meet current New York State Education Department regulations
  • Utilize the PN to RN transition course as the advanced placement mechanism
  • Participate on a voluntary basis
  • Record credit in terms of the receiving institution
  • Not require work experience
  • Establish the same graduation requirements for generic and articulation students

Frequently asked questions:

  • Who is eligible to take the PN to RN Transition Course?  Anyone who is eligible for licensure as a practical nurse in a US state or territory is eligible to take the PN to RN Transition Course. A list of US states and territories can be found at: http://www.usa.gov/Agencies/State_and_Territories.shtml

  • What does the PN to RN Transition Course cost?
    • $25 Administrative Fee: Each student enrolled in the PN to RN Transition Course pays a $25 Administrative Fee that is used by the Council for Associate Degree Nursing in New York State for oversight and evaluation of the PN to RN Transition Course. The nursing school where the course is taken collects $25 from each student and submits the money to the Council for Associate Degree Nursing in New York State.
    • Tuition:  Since the PN to RN Transition Course is a three-credit-equivalent course, the school where the course is taken will charge tuition equal to three credits. Tuition rates vary from school to school.
    • Other fees:  The school where the course is taken may charge fees in addition to tuition. For example, a school may charge fees for student activities, insurance, online fees, etc.
  • After taking the PN to RN Transition Course, how does a student get into a participating Associate Degree (RN) nursing program?  To enter an Associate Degree (RN) nursing program, an applicant must hold a current PN license in a US state or territory and meet the specific admission requirements of the participating Associate Degree (RN) nursing program to which she or he is applying.

  • Am I guaranteed to get admitted to an RN program? Successful completion of the PN to RN Transition Course makes you eligible to apply to one of the participating RN programs, but there is no guarantee you will be admitted. You must meet the specific admission requirements of the RN program(s) to which you apply. Also, some participating RN programs may not have enough space to accept all eligible applicants.  Be sure to ask in advance about admission requirements and space availability at the RN program(s) you are interested in attending.

  • Will nursing programs in other states honor the PN to RN Transition Course?  Probably not. The New York State Coalition for Educational Mobility’s LPN to RN Articulation Model was designed specifically for use by participating Associate Degree (RN) nursing programs in New York State. It is unlikely that an Associate Degree nursing program in another state will accept transfer credit for the PN to RN Transition Course or offer advanced placement based on completion of the PN to RN Transition Course.
